Hemantha Withanage, Sri Lanka
Hemantha Withanage is a scientist who has collaborated with the ELAW network since 1991 to protect the environment and public health in Sri Lanka. He is the Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) and Convenor of the Sri Lankan Working Group on Trade and IFIs. Hemantha holds a degree in biological sciences from Kelaniya University and previously worked as a science teacher. For more than a decade he worked with the Environmental Foundation Ltd., an environmental non-governmental organization in Colombo. He served as the Executive Director of the NGO Forum on ADB from 2005 to 2008. Hemantha is working to promote environmental justice, good governance and enforcing the laws. The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) is a new initiative created to protect the environment, ensure equal environmental rights for all people, and promote ecological sustainability by supporting environmentally sound community activities. CEJ's main program areas are: scientific and legal support on environmental matters, environmental education, monitoring global institutions and environmental monitoring.
