Welcome Kateryna from Ukraine

We are pleased to welcome an outstanding ELAW Fellow from Ukraine!

Dr. Kateryna Polianska is a landscape ecologist at the Kyiv office of Environment People Law. We made plans for Kateryna’s ELAW Fellowship long before Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Kateryna made the difficult decision to leave her family, friends, and colleagues behind to travel to Oregon to advance her work protecting communities and the environment in Ukraine.

Kateryna will work closely with ELAW Staff Attorneys, Staff Scientists, and other experts to document the environmental impacts of war, calculate damages, and identify best practices for restoring destroyed ecosystems.

Kateryna will also study English at the University of Oregon’s American English Institute (AEI). Many thanks to AEI for providing Kateryna with a Janet Hughes Mersereau Scholarship. And thanks to the Trust for Mutual Understanding for making Kateryna’s ELAW Fellowship possible.

We have hosted many ELAW Fellows and these Fellowships have been proven high impact. However, because of the pandemic, we have not hosted an ELAW Fellow in-person for two years!

We are thrilled to welcome Kateryna and will keep you informed of our work with her.
