U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Thomas Coffin ruled that Chevron has made "unduly burdensome" demands for information from ELAW. Chevron has been pursuing information from ELAW to avoid paying an $18 billion judgment awarded by a court in Ecuador for damages caused by oil operations in that country.

Chevron is one of the largest corporations in the world. Judge Coffin ruled that Chevron meant to harass ELAW, and ordered Chevron to pay ELAW's fees and costs.

Asis Perez to head Philippines Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources

ELAW Partner Asis Perez took the oath of office today as new director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the agency responsible for the improvement, management and conservation of the Philippines’ fisheries and water resources.

ELAW Partner Asis Perez took the oath of office today as new director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the agency responsible for the improvement, management and conservation of the Philippines’ fisheries and water resources.  He has vowed to combat destructive fishing methods and the continuous intrusion of commercial fishers into municipal waters all over the country.  Asis is the former Executive Director of Tanggol Kalikasan (Defense of Nature) and won the 2010 Clark R.  Bavin Wildlife Law Enforcement Award.  He has collaborated with ELAW since 1994.

Mercury in Macal bay snook “very alarming,” says Candy Gonzalez

There is no public advisory out; however, recently unveiled data on mercury levels in fish of the Macal River has one environmentalist and activist concerned that the community may be eating itself to poor health without knowing it.

Arcediano Dam Project Blocked in Mexico

The proposed Arcediano Dam has been an international outrage because of the environmental and human rights impacts. One resident, Mrs. Lara, refused to leave her home. With the help of IDEA attorney Raquel Gutierrez and ELAW Staff Scientist Meche Lu, the residents forced the Mexican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources to revoke its previous authorization for the project.
