We have been thrilled to host Fernando at ELAW this week, and collaborate on his work protecting some of the world's richest whale habitat from bad development projects.
The World Comes to Eugene
ELAW Fellows from three continents arrived on Monday to work with us to protect communities and the environment, and to participate in the 2011 Public Interest Environmental Law Conference. Yesterday, we toured NextStep Recycling, a model for e-waste recycling.

Arcediano Dam Project Blocked in Mexico
The proposed Arcediano Dam has been an international outrage because of the environmental and human rights impacts. One resident, Mrs. Lara, refused to leave her home. With the help of IDEA attorney Raquel Gutierrez and ELAW Staff Scientist Meche Lu, the residents forced the Mexican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources to revoke its previous authorization for the project.

After six years of struggle, one determined citizen of México has proven that persistence pays off. Mrs. Lupita Lara, together with ELAW partner organization Instituto De Derecho Ambiental (IDEA, A.C.), has relentlessly challenged the notorious Arcediano Dam, which would have caused environmental havoc in the state of Jalisco, México.

ELAW partners in Baja California are working to protect Punta Banda from a proposed golf course and resort. Tiger Woods is involved in designing the course and a Texas billionaire is financing it.
