The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a profound tragedy. Staff Scientist Mark Chernaik has written a guest column published in today's Register Guard, encouraging rigorous environmental analysis before projects like these are approved.

Arcediano Dam Project Blocked in Mexico

The proposed Arcediano Dam has been an international outrage because of the environmental and human rights impacts. One resident, Mrs. Lara, refused to leave her home. With the help of IDEA attorney Raquel Gutierrez and ELAW Staff Scientist Meche Lu, the residents forced the Mexican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources to revoke its previous authorization for the project.

After six years of struggle, one determined citizen of México has proven that persistence pays off.  Mrs. Lupita Lara, together with ELAW partner organization Instituto De Derecho Ambiental (IDEA, A.C.), has relentlessly challenged the notorious Arcediano Dam, which would have caused environmental havoc in the state of Jalisco, México.
